Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology is a rapidly growing field that has the potential to transform every aspect of society. Rice University has been investing in these areas for over a decade by hiring faculty, establishing the NSF Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, and building core infrastructure that enables SSPB-type of research.

Student Life. The School of Humanities at Rice University is a top liberal arts college rolled into a research university. Its small scale, combined with its research focus, brings advantages to both the undergraduates and to the graduate students in its five PhD-granting departments.

PhD in Economics T he doctoral program in Economics at Rice University provides rigorous training in economic theory and econometrics in order to prepare students for research careers in economics. In 2014, the department launched the Rice Initiative for the Study of Economics (RISE) in order to enhance its role as a leading center of economic research.

The PhD in Art History program at Rice University trains students for academic research and teaching, curatorial positions, and other careers in the visual arts. Program requirements include two years of coursework and the demonstration of two language proficiencies in addition to English, as well as the successful completion of a graduate research paper, oral and written.

The English as a Foreign Language test (TOEFL), is required for any student whose native language is not English. Applicants, who already hold a degree from a university where English is the official language, are exempt from providing a TOEFL score. Applicants must score at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, at least 250 on the computer-based.

Professor of English, Rice University. Bio. I grew up between Colorado and California, and spent much of my teen and early adult years in west coast countercultures. I did a lot of experimenting with the University of California, starting at Berkeley, but finally settled in to Wellesley College in 1984. As a Women’s Studies major at Wellesley, I pursued critical alongside creative projects.
